How To Make Detroit Deep Dish Pizza

You can now make your own version of the all-time favorite Detroit Deep Dish Pizza. The combination of herbs, bacon, cheese, and beef in one delicious dish is truly irresistible.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 pkg active dry yeast
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 cup warm water, 120 degrees-130 degrees
  • 2 Tbsp cooking oil
  • ¾ cup onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • 7 oz tomatoes, cut up
  • 8 oz tomato sauce
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 tsp dried basil, crushed
  • 1 tsp dried oregano, crushed
  • 1 tsp fennel seed, crushed (optional)
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • ¼ tsp pepper
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 cup onion, chopped
  • 2 medium tomatoes, very thinly sliced
  • 6 slices bacon
  • 3 cups cheddar, shredded

Instructions

  1. Cook chopped onion and garlic.

  2. Stir in tomatoes, tomato sauce, bay leaf, basil, oregano, fennel seed, sugar, and pepper then bring to boil.

  3. Reduce heat. Simmer uncovered for 35 to 40 minutes or to desired consistency, stirring occasionally.

  4. Discard bay leaf.

  5. Meanwhile, in a large bowl combine the flour, yeast, and salt.

  6. Add warm water and 2 tablespoons of oil.

  7. Beat with an electric mixer on low speed for 30 seconds, scraping bowl constantly.

  8. Beat on high speed for 3 minutes.

  9. Using a spoon, stir in as much of the remaining flour as you can.
  10. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface.

  11. Knead in enough remaining flour to make a moderately stiff dough that is smooth and elastic for about 6 to 8 minutes.

  12. Divide dough in half.

  13. Cover and let it rest 10 minutes. Grease two pizza pans or baking sheets.

  14. On a lightly floured surface, roll each half of the dough into a circle 1 inch larger than the pizza pan.

  15. Transfer dough to pans and build up edges slightly.

  16. Prick generously with a fork.

  17. Bake in a 425 degrees F oven for 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly browned.

  18. Meanwhile, in a large skillet cook ground beef and the onion until the meat is brown and onion is tender.

  19. Drain fat.

  20. Crisp cook bacon and cut it into 2-inch pieces each. Drain again.

  21. Spread pizza sauce over hot crusts. and sprinkle with ground beef mixture.

  22. Top with tomato slices and bacon pieces.

  23. Sprinkle with cheese.

  24. Bake for about 12 minutes more or until cheese melts and sauce is bubbly.
