Hearty Mac and Cheese Strata with Bacon Recipe

This dish combines the elegance of strata with the everyday appeal of mac ‘n cheese.

How To Make Hearty Mac and Cheese Strata with Bacon

  • 1/2 lb. elbow macaroni
  • 2 tbsp. butter
  • 1/2 cup shallots (diced)
  • 1 lb. mushrooms (button or exotic sliced )
  • 1 tbsp. white flour
  • 1/2 tsp. dry mustard
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 3/4 cup Emmenthaler cheese or Swiss (grated )
  • 1 1/2 cup mild cheddar (grated )
  • 6 slices bacon
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs made from fresh bread
  • 3/4 cup milk
  1. Cut the bacon crosswise into small strips.
  2. Fry until crisp.
  3. You’ll have automatic bacon bits.
  4. Wipe out the pan.
  5. You can now re-use it for your sauté portion of the recipe (later).
  6. Cook your pasta in a pot of boiling water.
  7. Drain the pasta and put it back in the pot.
  8. Add the milk, flour, mustard, salt, cayenne, Worcestershire and the cheese.
  9. Stir until well blended.
  10. While the pasta is cooking, in a sauté pan melt the butter and add the shallots and mushrooms.
  11. Cook on medium high until onions are loose and mushrooms have reduced and are beginning to brown just slightly on the sides.
  12. Now you’re ready to assemble your strata.
  13. In the bottom of a 9×9-inch oven-proof pan with tall sides, add your mushroom mixture.
  14. Then add half of the bacon.
  15. Add the mac and cheese mixture, the other half of the bacon and now the bread crumbs.
  16. Bake the pasta for 30 minutes at 350 degrees.
  17. The top will be crunchy and the flavor delicious!
