How To Make Nanaimo Bars

A rich and decadent dessert, Nanaimo Bars are a classic Canadian treat.

Preparation: 20 minutes
Cooking: None (requires chilling)
Total: 2 hours

Serves:

Ingredients

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 5 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 ¾ cups graham cracker crumbs
  • 1 cup shredded coconut
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts (optional)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons vanilla custard powder
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 4 ounces semisweet chocolate

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, combine melted butter, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, beaten egg, graham cracker crumbs, shredded coconut, and chopped walnuts (if using). Press mixture firmly into the bottom of a lightly greased 9×9-inch baking dish.

  2. In a separate bowl, cream together softened butter, vanilla custard powder, powdered sugar, and milk until light and fluffy. Spread this mixture evenly over the graham cracker crust.

  3. Melt the semisweet chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until smooth. Pour the melted chocolate over the custard layer and spread it evenly.

  4. Refrigerate the bars for at least 2 hours, or until firm. Cut into squares before serving.
