How To Make Nanaimo Bars
A rich and decadent dessert, Nanaimo Bars are a classic Canadian treat.
Serves:
Ingredients
- ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 5 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 ¾ cups graham cracker crumbs
- 1 cup shredded coconut
- ½ cup chopped walnuts (optional)
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 tablespoons vanilla custard powder
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 4 ounces semisweet chocolate
Instructions
-
In a medium bowl, combine melted butter, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, beaten egg, graham cracker crumbs, shredded coconut, and chopped walnuts (if using). Press mixture firmly into the bottom of a lightly greased 9×9-inch baking dish.
-
In a separate bowl, cream together softened butter, vanilla custard powder, powdered sugar, and milk until light and fluffy. Spread this mixture evenly over the graham cracker crust.
-
Melt the semisweet chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until smooth. Pour the melted chocolate over the custard layer and spread it evenly.
-
Refrigerate the bars for at least 2 hours, or until firm. Cut into squares before serving.
