How To Make Homemade Custard

Creamy and delicious homemade custard that is perfect for satisfying your dessert cravings.

Preparation: 10 minutes
Cooking: 25 minutes
Total: 35 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of milk
  • 1/2 cup of granulated sugar
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons of cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Fresh berries for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until it starts to steam. Do not let it boil.

  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar, egg yolks, cornstarch, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined.

  3. Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly until smooth.

  4. Return the custard mixture to the saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens and coats the back of a spoon. This will take about 10-15 minutes.

  5. Remove from heat and let cool slightly before transferring to serving dishes.

  6. Cover the custard with plastic wrap, making sure the wrap touches the surface of the custard to prevent a skin from forming. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until chilled and set.

  7. Serve the homemade custard chilled, garnished with fresh berries if desired.
