How To Make Enchilada Sauce

A spicy and flavorful sauce made with various spices and tomatoes, perfect for enchiladas.

Preparation: 10 minutes
Cooking: 20 minutes
Total: 30 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 can (14 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 1 cup chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the diced onion and minced garlic, and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.

  2. Stir in the chili powder, cumin, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes to toast the spices.

  3. Add the tomato sauce, broth, and sugar (if using) to the saucepan. Bring to a simmer and let cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  4. Remove the sauce from heat and let it cool slightly. Use an immersion blender or transfer the sauce to a blender, and blend until smooth.

  5. Use immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator until ready to use.
