How To Make Irish Soda Bread

The slight density of this Irish soda bread makes it the perfect side to any rich stew. The great thing is that it’s ready in less than an hour!

Total: 55 minutes



  • 2cupsall purpose flour
  • 2cupswhole wheat flour
  • 2tbspsugar
  • ½tspsalt
  • 1tspBaking Soda
  • cupsbuttermilk,or as needed
  • 1egg


  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

  2. Place dry ingredients in a bowl and whisk to combine.

  3. Add egg and half of the buttermilk. Stir to combine. Continue adding buttermilk a little bit at a time while stirring just until dough holds together.

  4. Form into a 9-inch circle with the dough and cut a cross shape ½-inch deep into the top.

  5. Bake on a parchment-lined pan for 45 to 50 minutes or until lightly browned and hollow-sounding when tapped.
