Preparation: 15 minutes
Cooking: 25 minutes
Total: 3 hours

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt.

  2. Make a well in the center and pour in the warm water and vegetable oil. Mix until a dough forms.

  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.

  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover with a clean kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

  5. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  6. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 4 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope and braid them together.

  7. Place the braided dough on the prepared baking sheet. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds, if desired.

  8. Cover with the kitchen towel and let it rise for another 30 minutes.

  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

  10. Remove from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack before serving.
