Photos of Arepas Con Queso Inspired By Encanto

Curious how the Arepas from Encanto taste like? It is basically an arepa stuffed with cheese. Arepa Con Queso is a round sweet and savory corncake that is filled with melted cheese. It is made with masarepa, a kind of pre-cooked corn flour or cornmeal, and is grilled, deep-fried, or boiled.

In the movie Encanto, Julieta Madrigal, Mirabel’s mother, “healed” her hand with an arepa. Although Julieta has the power to heal, it can also mean that the arepa brought Maribel comfort. This is because many Columbians grew up eating an arepa. It can be eaten as is, stuffed with cheese, or topped with butter. Piling it with toppings such as meat, seafood, eggs, or beans is also an option. It is often served for breakfast with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate.

Start your day with this cheesy arepas Encanto recipe paired with a cup of almond coffee or Nutella hot chocolate.

This 5-ingredient cheese arepas Encanto recipe makes pillowy corncakes filled with gooey melted cheese similar to Julieta's.

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 24 oz water, warm
  • 2 tsp kosher salt
  • 20 oz masarepa
  • 1 oz unsalted butter
  • 18 oz mozzarella cheese, shredded, divided

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine water and salt.

  2. Slowly add the masarepa, and begin mixing and kneading the dough until all of the masarepa is incorporated. Let the mixture sit for 3 minutes or until the dough is hydrated.

  3. Once the dough has rested, add the butter and cheese. Knead the dough for 4 to 5 minutes or until completely smooth and incorporated.

  4. Using wet hands, divide the dough into 8 relatively even balls. Flatten the dough until a round shape is formed.

  5. Add the shredded cheese to the middle of the dough, close each side, and form the dough into a ball. Carefully make a patty shape.

  6. Preheat a large skillet over medium-low heat. Brush the pan with more softened butter, then add the arepas.

  7. Cook on each side for 5 or 7 minutes, or until browned on both sides and cooked through. The arepas should be fluffy but not wet when cut into.

  8. Serve and enjoy!
