How To Make Chocolate Zucchini Bread

Have an indulgent breakfast and dessert with this chocolate zucchini bread. It’s baked with whole wheat flour and applesauce with walnut for crunch.

  • 1cupall purpose flour
  • 1cupwhole wheat flour
  • ¼cupunsweetened cocoa,preferably Dutch process
  • ½tspbaking powder
  • ½tspbaking soda
  • ½tspsalt
  • 3large eggs,lightly beaten
  • 1cupsugar
  • ¾cupunsweetened applesauce
  • ¼cupcanola oil
  • 1tspvanilla extract
  • 1ozunsweetened chocolate,melted
  • ½cupwalnuts,(1¾ oz) chopped
  • 2cupszucchini,grated from 1 large, squeezed well with a dishcloth
  • baking spray


  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Spray two 8½x4½-inch loaf pans with cooking spray.

  2. Whisk all-purpose flour, whole-wheat flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.

  3. Whisk eggs, sugar, applesauce, oil, vanilla, and melted chocolate in another large bowl until blended.

  4. Add the dry ingredients and stir with a rubber spatula until just combined.

  5. Fold in zucchini and walnuts.

  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pans. Bake the loaves for 55 to 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  7. Let cool for 10 minutes. Invert onto rack and cool completely.
