  • 1 cup Moong Dal (split yellow lentils)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 green chili, chopped
  • 1/2 inch ginger, grated
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish


  1. Wash the Moong Dal thoroughly and soak it in water for 1 hour.

  2. Heat oil in a pressure cooker, add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, and allow them to crackle.

  3. Add chopped onion, green chili, ginger, and garlic. Saute until the onion turns golden brown.

  4. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.

  5. Drain the soaked Moong Dal and add it to the pressure cooker. Also, add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well.

  6. Add 3 cups of water and pressure cook for about 3 whistles or until the Moong Dal is cooked and soft.

  7. Once the pressure releases, open the cooker and garnish with fresh coriander leaves.

  8. Serve hot with rice or roti.
