
How To Make Chopped Cheese Sandwiches
Transform ordinary burgers with this chopped cheese sandwiches recipe. Juicy beef with caramelized onions and melted cheese on top of a toasted hero roll.
Ingredients
For Filling:
- 1 tbsp oil
- 1 sweet onion, diced
- ½ tsp kosher salt
- ½ tsp freshly ground black pepper
- 4 burger patties, (or ½ lb ground beef)
- 8 slices American cheese, or cheddar cheese
For Bread:
- 4 hero rolls, sliced Âľ through
- 2 tbsp mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp ketchup
For Topping:
- 3 cups iceberg lettuce, shredded
- 2 tomatoes, sliced
Instructions
Filling:
- Heat oil in a large skillet over medium high heat . Saute diced onions and softened until caramelized. Transfer into a container and set aside.
- Season the patties with salt and pepper. Add the patties to the same skillet and incease the heat to high. Cook for 4 minutes or until bottom part is browned.
- Flip the burger on the other side and cook for another 1 minute. With 2 steel spatulas chop the burger into small pieces. Stirring constantly. Add the caramelized onions and keep stirring and chopping.
- While still in the pan divide the meat mixture into 4 even portions and top each portion with 2 slices of cheese. Turn off heat to let cheese melt properly.
Bread:
- Grab a serrated knife and slice each hero roll Âľ of the way through.
- In a separate skillet or grill pan, toast the bread until crispy or as preferred.
To Assemble:
- Using a spoon, spread a thin layer of mayo on the toasted rolls. Then drizzle ketchup on top.
- With a spatula, carefully add the filling into each roll.
- Add sliced tomatoes on top of the filling and sprinkle generously with shredded iceberg lettuce. Season with more salt and pepper if preferred. Serve warm.
Recipe Notes
As an option wrap each roll with aluminum foil. Cut in half and serve warm.
