How To Make Molasses Chicken Drumsticks

A wonderful way to serve these delectable chicken drumsticks with the help of molasses! A fuller and richer flavored chicken with its complex sweet flavor along with the subtle smoky flavor of molasses, in addition to the distinctive taste you'd naturally get when grilling in a barbecue.

  • ¼ cup butter stick
  • 1 cup onion (minced )
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup molasses
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar (packed )
  • 1 ½ tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tsp yellow mustard
  • ¾ tsp ground black pepper (divided)
  • ¼ tsp chili powder
  • 1 ½ tsp coarse kosher salt
  • 12 chicken drumsticks
  1. Melt butter in large saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add onion; sauté until soft, about 6 minutes.
  3. Add next 5 ingredients, ¼ teaspoon of pepper, and chili powder.

  4. Reduce heat to medium-low; simmer until sauce thickens, about 18 minutes.
  5. Season with salt.
  6. Can be made 1 day ahead. Cover and chill.
  7. Mix 1 ½ teaspoons of salt and ½ teaspoon of pepper in bowl.

  8. Loosen skin on drumsticks.
  9. Rub salt and pepper mixture under skin without tearing skin.
  10. Cover; let stand at room temperature 30 minutes.
  11. Prepare barbecue (medium heat).
  12. Grill drumsticks until skin is crisp and juices run clear, turning to cook all sides, about 25 minutes.
  13. Transfer ½ cup barbecue sauce to small bowl; reserve.

  14. Brush drumsticks with remaining sauce and cook until glaze forms, about 3 minutes longer.
  15. Transfer drumsticks to platter and serve with reserved sauce.
