Ingredients

  • 1 cup chana dal (split chickpeas)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup ghee (clarified butter)
  • 1/4 teaspoon saffron strands
  • 4-5 cloves
  • 4-5 cardamom pods, crushed
  • 1/4 cup almonds, chopped
  • 1/4 cup pistachios, chopped
  • 2 cups water
  • A pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Rinse the chana dal well and soak it in water for 2-3 hours. Then, drain the water.

  2. In a pressure cooker, add the soaked chana dal, water, and a pinch of salt. Cook for 3-4 whistles or until the dal is soft and cooked.

  3. In a separate pan, heat ghee and add cloves, cardamom, and saffron strands. Cook for a minute until fragrant.

  4. Add the cooked chana dal to the pan and mix well with the ghee and spices.

  5. Cook on low heat for 10-15 minutes, stirring constantly.

  6. Add sugar and continue cooking until the sugar dissolves and the mixture thickens.

  7. Add chopped almonds and pistachios, reserving some for garnishing. Mix well.

  8. Cook for another 5 minutes until the halva thickens further and starts to leave the sides of the pan.

  9. Remove from heat and transfer the halva to a serving dish.

  10. Garnish with remaining chopped nuts and saffron strands.

  11. Serve warm or cold.
