Tortillas are essential to make our favorite burritos, quesadillas and chips. This tortillas recipe teaches you an easy way to make homemade tortillas for all your wraps.

How To Make Tortillas

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp shortening
  • 1/4 cup boiling water (use as needed)
  1. Mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. Cut in shortening and mix in until it resembles cornmeal.

  2. Add water slowly, mixing with your hands. Stop adding water once you get a soft dough. You may use up to 1/3 cup of water.

  3. Knead for a few minutes on a floured surface until smooth and elastic.

  4. Brush the top with oil and put back in the bowl. Cover and let rest for 10 minutes.

  5. Divide the dough into small balls the size of golf balls and roll them out into your desired size and thickness.

  6. Cook in a cast iron grill or heavy skillet over medium heat until top is slightly bubbly.

  7. Turn the tortillas and let the other side cook for a minute or two. Do not overcook as they will become hard.

  8. Keep stacked and warm inside a clean dish towel until ready to eat.
