Making homemade flour tortillas sounds like a daunting task…but, never fear! This recipe is fun, fast and easy.

How To Make Homemade Flour Tortilla Recipe

  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • 2 tbsp lard
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • Add all ingredients to list
  1. Mix together flour, salt and baking powder in a medium-sized glass bowl.
  2. Then, add in the lard until the flour begins to resemble cornmeal.
  3. Once this is done, combine the water slowly with the rest of the mixture until the dough comes together cohesively.
  4. Then, place the dough on a lightly floured surface and knead a few minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Once your dough is ready, separate it into 24 equal-sized balls.
  6. Now it’s time to begin cooking your tortillas.
  7. Preheat a large skillet.
  8. Then, use a well-floured rolling pin to roll to flatten the balls into round tortillas.
  9. Place into the hot skillet, and cook until bubbly and golden.
  10. Flip and continue cooking until golden on the other side.


How To Make Homemade Flour Tortilla Recipe

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour, set aside 1 cup for dusting
  • 1 tsp fine salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • cup olive oil, or vegetable oil
  • 1 cup warm water


  1. Combine 3 cups of flour, salt and baking powder in a large mixing bowl. Using a wooden spatula, mix dry ingredients until they are well combined.

  2. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients, add the oil, then pour your warm water gradually as you mix them together. Make sure all dry ingredients are incorporated properly with your oil and water until the dough begins to come together cohesively.

  3. Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and knead a few minutes until smooth and elastic, then cover your dough with a clean kitchen towel allowing it to rest for at least 15 minutes up to 45 minutes.

  4. After resting time, divide your dough into 16 equal portions. Lightly dusting each piece as you flatten them with your rolling pin to about 6 inch diameter. Avoid stacking them on top of each other while uncooked.

  5. Once your dough is ready, you can now start cooking them.

  6. Preheat heavy bottomed pan on medium heat. Once you see a smoke coming from the pan, then you can start cooking one tortilla at a time, allowing one side to cook for 45 seconds to 1 minute.

  7. When you notice it form some bubbles, check your tortilla until you see there are golden brown spots. Flip to the other side and continue cooking for 20 seconds or until you achieve the golden brown spots also. Repeat the same procedure for the rest of the tortillas.

  8. After cooking you can either serve them right away or keep them in a covered container wrapped with a clean cloth for best results.
