Slow Cooker Chicken and Chick Pea Tagine Recipe

How To Make Slow Cooker Chicken and Chick Pea Tagine

This tagine recipe is inspired by Morocco’s spicy and earthy flavors and packs them in a slow-cooked dish with chicken, chickpeas, tomatoes, & carrots.

Total: 4 hours 20 minutes



  • 2tbspolive oil
  • yellow onion,chopped
  • 1mediumcarrot,(⅓ cup) peeled and diced, optional
  • 3clovesgarlic,(1 tbsp), minced
  • tspground coriander
  • 1tspground cumin
  • ½tspground ginger
  • ½tspturmeric
  • ½tspground cinnamon
  • tspcayenne pepper,optional
  • cuplow-sodium chicken broth
  • 14½oztomatoes,diced
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • lbschicken breasts,boneless skinless, diced into 1¼-inch pieces
  • 14½ozchick peas,drained and rinsed
  • cupapricots,or whole raisins, optional
  • tbspfresh lemon juice
  • ¼cupfresh cilantro,chopped
  • ¼cupfresh parsley,optional, chopped


  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add in onion and carrot and saute for 6 minutes.

  2. Add in garlic, coriander, cumin, ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper and saute 30 seconds longer.

  3. Stir in chicken broth, tomatoes and apricots and season with salt and pepper to taste.

  4. Pour mixture into a slow cooker, add in chicken and chick peas and toss mixture.

  5. Cover and cook on low heat for 3½ to 4 hours until chicken is cooked through.

  6. Stir in lemon juice, cilantro and parsley. Serve warm over rice or couscous.
