Serves:
Ingredients
- 1 gallon of whole milk
- 1/4 cup of white vinegar
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- Optional: herbs, spices, or flavorings of your choice
Instructions
-
Heat the milk in a large pot over medium heat until it reaches a temperature of 180°F (82°C), stirring occasionally to prevent scorching.
-
Once the milk reaches the desired temperature, remove it from heat and slowly add the vinegar, stirring gently for about 2 minutes.
-
Let the mixture sit undisturbed for 5 minutes to allow the curds to form.
-
Line a colander with cheesecloth and place it over a large bowl or sink.
-
Gently pour the curds and whey into the colander, allowing the whey to drain away.
-
Once most of the whey has drained, gather the edges of the cheesecloth and gently squeeze to remove any remaining liquid.
-
Open the cheesecloth and sprinkle salt over the curds, then gently mix to incorporate.
-
If desired, add herbs, spices, or flavorings of your choice and mix well.
-
Transfer the cheese to a container and refrigerate for at least 2 hours to allow it to set and develop its flavor.
-
Homemade cheese is now ready to be enjoyed!
