Serves:

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of basmati rice
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 cups of water

Instructions

  1. Rinse the basmati rice with water until the water runs clear. Drain and set aside.

  2. In a large pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.

  3. Add the sliced onions to the pan and cook until they turn golden brown, stirring occasionally.

  4. Stir in the turmeric powder and salt, and cook for another minute.

  5. Add the drained rice to the pan and stir well to coat it with the onion mixture.

  6. Pour in the water and bring it to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is cooked and the water is absorbed.

  7. Fluff the rice with a fork before serving.
