Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 3 ½ tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Food coloring (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour four 8-inch round cake pans.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add in the softened butter and mix until the mixture resembles fine crumbs.

  3. Gradually pour in the milk and vanilla extract, mixing until just combined.

  4. Divide the batter evenly into six separate bowls. Add a few drops of food coloring to each bowl and mix until the desired color is achieved.

  5. Starting with one color, spoon a small amount of batter into the center of the first cake pan. Using the back of a spoon, spread the batter out in an even layer. Repeat with the remaining colors and pans.

  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.

  7. Remove from the oven and let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

  8. Once the cakes are cooled, stack them on top of each other, using your favorite frosting in between the layers. Decorate as desired and serve.
