  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 large eggs
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Sprinkles and decorations (optional)

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2-3 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans.

  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add in softened butter and mix until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together milk, vanilla extract, and eggs. Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined.

  4. If desired, divide the batter into different bowls and add food coloring to create different layers of cake.

  5. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Bake for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  6. Remove cakes from the oven and allow them to cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

  7. Meanwhile, prepare the frosting by creaming together powdered sugar, softened butter, milk, and vanilla extract until light and fluffy. Add food coloring if desired.

  8. Once the cakes are completely cooled, spread a layer of frosting onto one cake layer. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the sides and top of the cake.

  9. Decorate with sprinkles and any desired birthday decorations.

  10. Serve and enjoy!
