Honey Bun Cake Recipe

How To Make Honey Bun Cake

Learn to make the classic honey bun cake with this recipe! Moist yellow cake is filled with brown sugar and pecans then topped with delicate vanilla icing.

For Yellow Cake:

  • cupsall-purpose flour
  • cupssugar
  • 1tbspbaking powder
  • 1cupsour cream
  • ¼cupVegetable Oil
  • ½cupunsalted butter ,softened
  • 1tbspvanilla
  • 2eggs,large
  • 2egg yolks,large

For Brown Sugar Pecan Filling:

  • 1cupbrown sugar ,packed
  • cuppecans,chopped
  • 2tspCinnamon

For Vanilla Icing:

  • 2cupspowdered sugar
  • 3tbspwhole milk
  • 2tspvanilla extract


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 9×9-inch baking pan with baking spray.

  2. In your stand mixer, mix the softened butter, sour cream, vegetable oil, vanilla and eggs until fully combined and lightened then add in the flour, sugar and baking powder on low speed.

  3. Pour ½ of the batter in the bottom of the baking pan and spread.

  4. In a small bowl mix the brown sugar, cinnamon and pecans and sprinkle over the cake batter in the baking pan.

  5. Add in the remaining half of the batter carefully and bake for 45 minutes until the top is just golden brown.

  6. Combine the powdered sugar, milk and vanilla, poke the cake with a fork 10 to 15 times. Pour over the milk and vanilla mix to the cake then let cool completely.
