Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Sauce Recipe

A rich cake made with a touch of coffee is topped off with the perfect sauce, best served warm.

How To Make Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Sauce

Decadent chocolate cake recipe with some vanilla sauce.

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 ¾ cups sugar
  • 12 cups cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt (optional)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ⅔ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 egg (lightly beaten)
  • 1 cup strong brewed coffee (hot)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Sift first 5 ingredients together in a bowl.
  3. Add next 5 ingredients and combine.
  4. Batter will be thin.
  5. Pour into a buttered and floured 9 by 13-inch baking pan.
  6. Bake for 30 minutes or until tester comes out clean when inserted in center.
  7. Combine sugar and cornstarch in a heavy saucepan.
  8. Add water.
  9. Bring to a boil over medium high heat, stirring constantly.
  10. When mixture begins to thicken, remove from heat.
  11. Stir in butter and vanilla.
  12. Serve sauce over cake.
