How To Make Seitan Wheat Meat

Turning vegan may look challenging for some, especially for those who can’t turn their eyes away from meat. But they just haven’t found these sumptuous vegan recipes that even non-vegans will surely enjoy!

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 2 cups vital wheat gluten
  • 1/2 cup nutritional yeast
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 1/2 cups vegetable broth
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp liquid smoke

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the vital wheat gluten, nutritional yeast, garlic powder, onion powder, and smoked paprika.

  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the vegetable broth, soy sauce, tomato paste, olive oil, and liquid smoke.

  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.

  4. Knead the dough for a few minutes to develop the gluten. Let it rest for 10 minutes.

  5. Divide the dough into 4 equal pieces and shape each piece into a log shape.

  6. In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add the seitan logs and reduce heat to a simmer. Cook for 45 minutes, covered.

  7. Remove the seitan from the pot and let it cool slightly. Slice and use as desired in recipes.
