  • 2cupsmilkor light cream, more as needed
  • ½tspsaltor to taste
  • 1cupregular gritsor quick-cooking grits
  • 3tbspbutter


  1. Bring milk, water, and salt to a simmer over medium heat.

  2. Slowly add grits while whisking to avoid lumps.

  3. Cook grits covered over medium-low heat, stirring frequently for about 15 minutes for regular grits and 5 minutes for quick-cooking grits.

  4. Remove from heat and stir in butter. Season with salt and pepper and serve.
