How To Make Irish Soda Bread

Preparation: 15 minutes
Cooking: 45 minutes
Total: 60 minutes

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a baking sheet.

  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.

  3. Gradually add the buttermilk while stirring with a wooden spoon until a soft dough forms.

  4. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead lightly for about 1 minute.

  5. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on the prepared baking sheet.

  6. Use a sharp knife to make a cross-shaped incision on top of the loaf.

  7. Bake for 40-45 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

  8. Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
