How To Make Irish Ground Beef Casserole

Make a delicious stout beer-infused casserole for a heart warming meal of smooth and creamy potatoes and savory ground beef. Yum!

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 2 lbs potatoes, cooked and mashed
  • oz yellow onion, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup dark beer, of your choice, preferably Guinness
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp red wine vinegar
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • ¼ tsp ground cloves
  • salt and ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tsp parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven at 350 degrees F.
  2. Heat up a skillet. Add ground beef and saute for roughly 8 to 10 minutes until caramelized. Set aside and drain excess fat (do not drain all).

  3. Add onions and garlic in the same skillet and saute until translucent.

  4. Add mustard, cloves, and flour. Roast briefly.

  5. Deglaze with beer and reduce briefly.

  6. Add the beef broth, sugar, and red wine vinegar. Bring the mixture to a simmer. Continue simmering for at least 15 minutes or until the sauce has reduced by half.

  7. Return the beef back to the sauce. Mix thoroughly, then adjust seasoning to taste with salt and pepper.

  8. Transfer the beef filling into a baking casserole of your choice (no need to grease). Spread evenly, then cover with mashed potatoes. You can either pipe the mashed potatoes onto the casserole or spread this evenly and design with a fork (if preferred).

  9. Place in the oven and bake for roughly 45 minutes. until the top turns a golden brown.

  10. Garnish with parsley and serve immediately.
