Serves:
Ingredients
- 4 cups of milk
- 1/2 cup of plain yogurt (with live cultures)
- 2 tablespoons of sugar
- 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
Instructions
-
Heat the milk in a pot over medium heat until it reaches a temperature of 180°F (82°C). Stir occasionally to prevent burning.
-
Remove the pot from heat and let the milk cool to 110°F (43°C). You can use a thermometer to check the temperature.
-
In a small bowl, whisk together the plain yogurt and sugar until well combined.
-
Add the yogurt mixture to the cooled milk and whisk until smooth.
-
Stir in the vanilla extract.
-
Cover the pot with a lid and wrap it in a towel to keep it warm.
-
Place the pot in a warm place (like inside the oven with the light on) for 8-24 hours to allow the yogurt to ferment. The longer it ferments, the tangier it will become.
-
After the fermentation time, refrigerate the yogurt for at least 2 hours to chill and thicken.
-
Serve the homemade vanilla yogurt with your favorite toppings or enjoy it plain.
