How To Make Homemade Mashed Potatoes and Gravy

Eat-up with our own take on a homemade classic side dish. Mashed and flavorful, we made sure our potatoes are complemented with a rich and irresistible gravy.

Potatoes

  • 6 cups Russets Potatoes (cubed)
  • 6 tbsp. garlic cloves (peeled)
  • 3/4 cup 1% low-fat milk
  • 1 tbsp. butter or stick margarine
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. ground black pepper

Gravy

  • 1 tbsp. butter or stick margarine
  • 2 tbsp. all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup 1% low-fat milk
  • 1/2 tsp. ground black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 2 tbsp. fresh chives (chopped)
  1. Potatoes:

  2. Place potatoes and garlic in a Dutch oven filled with water. Cover the pot and pace the stove on LOW heat.

  3. Bring the pot to a boil. Add in your potatoes and cook for 20 minutes or until very tender. You can use a fork to check if your potatoes are soft enough to be mashed.

  4. Drain well with a strainer and return to the pot. Adjust to MEDIUM heat.

  5. Stir in 3/4 cup milk, 1 tablespoon butter, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper.

  6. Mash the potato mixture with a potato masher until you get a thick and creamy consistency.

  7. Cook for 5 minutes or until thoroughly heated.
  8. Keep warm.
  9. Gravy:

  10. Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a saucepan over medium heat.

  11. Add flour, and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.

  12. Gradually add 1 cup milk, 1/2 teaspoon pepper, and 1/4 teaspoon salt; stir with a whisk.

  13. Bring to a boil; stir constantly.

  14. Reduce heat to a LOW, and cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  15. Serve gravy with potatoes; sprinkle with chives.

You have to note that not all potatoes are meant to be mashed for cooking. Some are best served with soups while others are best for salads. It’s also good to note that proper storage of your potatoes may cause spoilage and may affect the flavors. 

Make sure that when you’re boiling potatoes, the water in the pot must be cold or just right. You would want to cook and heat the potatoes along with the water rather than cooking it in pre-heated water.
