Classic Cooked Eggnog Recipe

Forget the store-bought kind and make homemade eggnog for a real holiday treat.

How To Make Classic Cooked Egg Nog

  • 6 eggs
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 tsp. salt (optional)
  • 1 quart milk (divided)
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
  1. In large saucepan, beat together eggs, sugar and salt, if desired.
  2. Stir in 2 C. of the milk.
  3. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture is thick enough to coat a metal spoon with a thin film and reaches at least 160°F.
  4. Remove from heat. Stir in remaining 2 C. of milk and vanilla.
  5. Cover and refrigerate until thoroughly chilled, several hours or overnight.
  6. Serve garnished with whipped cream and nutmeg!
