I never tried baking with cardamom spice before so when I heard that it was possible to make baked goods with it, I got curious. Cardamom is one of those well-known seed pods spices that has a unique flavor and aroma. It has a mild sweet flavor with hints of citrus and a fennel-like taste. It’s mostly used in Indian cuisine to make savory dishes. But after making these tasty cardamom cookies, I realized that cardamom tastes great as a baked dessert as well.
These cardamom cookies turned out better than expected. I’m definitely adding this recipe to my list of baking ideas. They were crisp, light, and soft in the middle which got me munching on them. What makes these cookies so delicious is the combination of cardamom with the ground cinnamon and almonds. It’s then mixed together with sugar, butter, flour, eggs, and a grated lemon peel for a subtle tang. Each ingredient really contributes to the overall flavor and depth of the cardamom cookies.
Cardamom cookies are slightly different from your usual butter cookies and shortbread cookies. It’s not an overly sweet dessert, and doesn’t use high amounts of flour and butter. Thus, the resulting cookies are not too dense nor crumbly. These cardamom cookies are just perfectly soft to eat with their sweet and light tang qualities.
I used ground cardamom for this recipe. If you only have cardamom pods on hand, then you can easily grind the seeds into powder. Freshly ground cardamom seeds from the pod will add a richer flavor to the cookies since it’s from raw seed pods. Whether it’s store-bought or raw seeds, these cardamom cookies will still taste wonderful, especially with a cup of warm milk or tea on the side. It’s really one of the best cookies to share with family and friends.
I had such fun making and eating these cookies that I made some more. I kept them stored in an airtight container, and then refrigerated them. They stayed fresh for up to 2 weeks which made them perfect for late night snacking. You should totally include these cookies to your list of baking recipes and cardamom recipes to really experience and savor the cookies’ heartwarming taste. Feel free to sprinkle some more granulated sugar on top of the warm cookies for that extra sweetness.
