How To Make Great Northern Beans and Ham

This beans and ham soup filled with carrots, celery, and onions is a hearty and comforting dish that does not take a lot of effort and money to make.

Ingredients

  • 1lbsGreat Northern Beansdry
  • 1lbham hock
  • 1tbspolive oil
  • 1oniondiced
  • 2carrotschopped
  • 1celerychopped
  • 1bay leaf
  • 1tbspbrown sugar
  • 4cupschicken broth
  • 4cupswater
  • 1tbspfresh parsleyoptional

Instructions

  1. Rinse beans in a large pot and remove any debris. Place in a large pot and cover with cold water. Let sit overnight. Drain well.

  2. Cook onion in olive oil for 5 minutes or until softened.

  3. Combine beans, onion, carrot, celery, bay leaf, ham hock, and seasonings in a pot. Add 4 cups chicken broth and 4 cups water, bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer 1½ to 2 hours or until beans are tender.

  4. Discard bay leaf, taste and season with salt and pepper. Garnish with parsley and serve.
