Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup molasses
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Royal icing for decorating (optional)
Instructions

In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt. Set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.

Add molasses, egg, and vanilla extract to the butter mixture. Mix until well combined.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.

Divide the dough into two equal portions and flatten each into a disk. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Roll out one portion of dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness. Cut out gingerbread house shapes using a template or freehand. Repeat with the remaining portion of dough.

Transfer the cut-out pieces to the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until lightly golden brown around the edges.

Let the gingerbread pieces cool completely before assembling the birdhouse.

Use royal icing to glue the pieces together, decorating as desired with additional icing and candies.

Allow the icing to set before serving or displaying.
