Ingredients

  • 2 cups dried beans (such as navy or pinto)
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Water, as needed

Instructions

  1. Soak the dried beans overnight in water. Drain and rinse before using.

  2. Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C).

  3. In a large Dutch oven or bean pot, combine the soaked beans, diced onion, minced garlic, molasses, brown sugar, soy sauce, mustard, salt, and black pepper.

  4. Add enough water to cover the beans completely.

  5. Cover the pot with a lid and place it in the preheated oven.

  6. Cook the beans for 4 hours, or until they are tender and cooked through.

  7. Check occasionally and add more water if needed to keep the beans moist.

  8. Serve the bean-hole beans hot as a main dish or as a side dish with bread or rice.
