How To Make Hamburger Steak

Hamburger steak is a beef patty cooked in rich brown gravy. Try this hamburger steak recipe made with flavorful mushroom gravy.

Preparation: 15 minutes
Cooking: 25 minutes
Total: 40 minutes



  • 8ozmushrooms,sliced
  • 2garlic cloves,minced
  • 1onion,divided
  • 1tbspolive oil
  • ¼cupbutter
  • 3tbspall-purpose flour
  • ¼tspdried thyme
  • 2cupsbeef broth,not low sodium
  • 1tbspWorcestershire sauce

For Beef Patties:

  • 1lbground beef
  • 1egg
  • cupbread crumbs
  • ½tspgarlic powder
  • 2tbspfresh parsley


  1. Cut ¼ of the onion into a fine dice.

  2. Slice the remaining ¾ into ¼-inch slices.

  3. Combine the ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, garlic powder, parsley, diced onion, salt, and pepper in a bowl.

  4. Form 6 patties or 4 larger patties.

  5. Add oil to a medium pan over medium heat.

  6. Brown patties 2 to 3 minutes per side. Remove from pan and set aside.

  7. Add butter, sliced onions, garlic and mushrooms to the pan. Mix well.

  8. Cook 5 to 6 minutes or until the onions start to soften.

  9. In a small pot, add in the flour and thyme.

  10. Gradually stir in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.

  11. Simmer over low heat stirring, occasionally until the gravy thickens, for 5 minutes.

  12. Add beef patties, cover, and simmer for an additional 12 to 14 minutes or until cooked through.

  13. Serve over mashed potatoes or rice, and enjoy!
