How To Make Pastel de Papas (Chilean Potato Pie)

  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley


  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish.

  2. In a large pot, boil the potatoes until tender. Drain and mash with the butter and milk until smooth. Set aside.

  3. In a skillet, cook the ground beef, onion, and garlic over medium heat until the beef is browned and the onion is soft. Drain any excess fat.

  4. Add the cumin, paprika, salt, and black pepper to the beef mixture. Stir well to combine.

  5. Spread half of the mashed potatoes into the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Top with the beef mixture and sprinkle with half of the Parmesan cheese. Repeat the layers ending with a layer of mashed potatoes.

  6. Sprinkle the remaining Parmesan cheese on top and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until golden and bubbly.

  7. Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Sprinkle with chopped fresh parsley before serving.
