How To Make Walleye Fish Tacos

Crispy walleye paired with fresh toppings on a warm tortilla – the perfect taco night meal!

Ingredients

  • For the fish:
  • 1 lb walleye fillets, cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup panko bread crumbs
  • Oil for frying
  • For the toppings:
  • 2 cups shredded green cabbage
  • 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 avocado, diced
  • 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and diced
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 lime, cut into wedges
  • For serving:
  • 8 taco-sized flour tortillas

Instructions

  1. In a shallow bowl, whisk together flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.

  2. In a separate shallow bowl, whisk together milk and egg.

  3. Place panko breadcrumbs in a third shallow bowl.

  4. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

  5. Dip each piece of walleye in the flour mixture, then the milk mixture, and then the panko breadcrumbs.

  6. Place the breaded fish in the hot oil and pan-fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes on each side.

  7. Remove fish from skillet and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.

  8. Warm the tortillas in the microwave or in a dry skillet.

  9. Assemble tacos by layering cabbage, red onion, avocado, jalapeno, cilantro, and fried walleye on top of each tortilla.

  10. Serve with lime wedges on the side.
