Depending on what city you live in, each hot dog recipe comes with ranges of toppings. We know in Chicago it is a horrible thing if you ask for ketchup on your hotdog, and most come with cucumbers, pickle spears, onions, and hot peppers. However, here is an old-time recipe that will leave you full and satisfied.
How To Make Hot Dogs with Cabbage
Here comes another hot dog recipe that cooks it with cabbage, bacon drippings and tart apples for a different take.
Ingredients
- 1 head cabbage, small, shredded
- 2 tart apples, such as Granny Smith, peeled, cored, and sliced
- 2 oz carrots, shredded
- 3 tbsp bacon drippings
- 1½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp ground black pepper
- 6 hot dogs
- ⅓ cup broth, pork, chicken, or beef
- 3 tbsp vinegar
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tbsp flour
- 6 hot dog buns
To Serve:
- condiments, of your choice
- parsley, chopped
Instructions

Fry the hotdogs in a hot deep skillet with the bacon drippings and set aside.
- Place shredded cabbage in a large skillet; add shredded apples, and broth. Bring to a boil then season with salt and ground black pepper.
- Cook for about 3 minutes, stirring constantly, or until cabbage is tender but still crisp. Drain and reserve the liquid.
- Combine vinegar, sugar, flour, and the cabbage liquid.
- Pour into the cabbage mixture and cook until thickened and smooth, and set aside.

Assemble this with your toasted bread and top with your choice of condiment or sauce, then garnish with chopped parsley. Enjoy!
