Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs pork shoulder, cut into cubes
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, grated
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon five-spice powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • Steamed rice, for serving

Instructions

  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the pork shoulder and cook until browned on all sides.

  2. Add the sliced onion, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Cook for 2-3 minutes until fragrant.

  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, chicken broth, brown sugar, five-spice powder, salt, and black pepper. Pour the mixture into the pot with the pork.

  4. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover the pot and let simmer for 1.5-2 hours, or until the pork is tender and cooked through.

  5. Serve the Chinese pork over steamed rice and garnish with chopped green onions.
