How To Make Monte Cristo Sandwich

You can never go wrong with this Monte Cristo sandwich. Slices of ham, turkey, and cheese fill bread slices that are pan-fried to golden brown perfection.

Ingredients

  • 8slicesTexas toast white bread
  • ½lbturkeysliced
  • ½lbhamsliced
  • 8slicesswiss cheese
  • 1cupflour
  • 1egg
  • 1tbspbaking powder
  • 1tbspsugar
  • 1cupwater
  • oilfor frying
  • powdered sugarand raspberry jam for serving

Instructions

  1. Lay 4 slices of the bread on a flat surface.

  2. Layer the ham, then cheese, then turkey onto each piece of bread. Top with the remaining slices of bread.

  3. Place toothpicks into all four corners of each sandwich to secure the sandwiches closed.

  4. Add the flour, egg, baking powder, sugar and water to a medium bowl. Mix until smooth.

  5. Heat 2 inches of oil in a deep skillet to 350 degrees F.

  6. Dredge one sandwich in the batter, making sure all surfaces are covered.

  7. Place in the oil and cook for 2 to 3 minutes on each surface, turning carefully with the tongs to make sure all sides are browned.

  8. Repeat the batter and cooking process with the remaining sandwiches.

  9. Remove the toothpicks from the sandwiches. Cut each sandwich into quarters.

  10. Sprinkle the sandwiches with powdered sugar and serve with raspberry jam.
