Serves:
Ingredients
- 2 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1 cup of unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/4 cup of ice water
- 4 large apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup of granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup of brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons of cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon of butter, melted
- 1 egg, beaten
- Vanilla ice cream (optional, for serving)
Instructions
-
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease your iron skillet with butter or cooking spray.
-
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Add the cold cubed butter and mix with a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
-
Slowly add the ice water, a tablespoon at a time, mixing with a fork until the dough comes together. Shape the dough into a ball, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
-
In a separate bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cornstarch, and lemon juice. Toss gently to coat the apples evenly.
-
Roll out the chilled dough on a lightly floured surface to fit your iron skillet. Carefully transfer the rolled dough to the skillet and press it to cover the bottom and sides.
-
Pour the apple mixture into the skillet, spreading it out evenly.
-
Drizzle the melted butter over the apple filling.
-
Roll out the remaining dough and cut it into strips. Create a lattice pattern over the apple filling by weaving the strips.
-
Brush the beaten egg over the lattice top for a golden finish.
-
Place the skillet on a baking sheet to catch any possible drips and bake for 45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly.
-
Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
-
Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, if desired.
