Preparation: 20 minutes
Cooking: 45 minutes
Total: 65 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 cup of unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/4 cup of ice water
  • 4 large apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup of brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons of cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon of butter, melted
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Vanilla ice cream (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease your iron skillet with butter or cooking spray.

  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Add the cold cubed butter and mix with a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  3. Slowly add the ice water, a tablespoon at a time, mixing with a fork until the dough comes together. Shape the dough into a ball, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

  4. In a separate bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cornstarch, and lemon juice. Toss gently to coat the apples evenly.

  5. Roll out the chilled dough on a lightly floured surface to fit your iron skillet. Carefully transfer the rolled dough to the skillet and press it to cover the bottom and sides.

  6. Pour the apple mixture into the skillet, spreading it out evenly.

  7. Drizzle the melted butter over the apple filling.

  8. Roll out the remaining dough and cut it into strips. Create a lattice pattern over the apple filling by weaving the strips.

  9. Brush the beaten egg over the lattice top for a golden finish.

  10. Place the skillet on a baking sheet to catch any possible drips and bake for 45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly.

  11. Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

  12. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, if desired.
