Preparation: 30 minutes
Cooking: 45 minutes
Total: 1 hour and 15 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, diced
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup whole milk
  • 2 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease a 9-inch round baking dish.

  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.

  3. Add the cold diced butter to the dry ingredients. Use your fingers or a pastry cutter to cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

  4. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, vanilla extract, and milk. Pour the mixture into the flour mixture and stir until a dough forms.

  5. Press the dough into the greased baking dish, covering the bottom and about 1 inch up the sides.

  6. Bake the crust in the preheated oven for 15 minutes, then remove from the oven and let cool.

  7. In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat until it starts to steam. Remove from heat and add the chopped semisweet chocolate. Let sit for a few minutes, then whisk until smooth and creamy.

  8. Pour the chocolate filling into the cooled crust and spread it evenly.

  9. In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.

  10. Spread the whipped cream over the chocolate filling, creating a smooth surface.

  11. Refrigerate the torta for at least 4 hours, or overnight, to set.

  12. Before serving, dust the top of the torta with powdered sugar.

  13. Slice and serve chilled. Enjoy!
