How To Make Japanese Beef Bowl (Gyudon) Recipe

A savory and comforting dish with tender beef slices simmered in a slightly sweet and savory sauce, served over steamed rice.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb thinly sliced beef (sirloin or rib-eye)
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch ginger, grated
  • 4 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp sake (or dry white wine)
  • 2 tbsp mirin
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 4 cups cooked rice
  • 4 green onions, chopped (optional)
  • Furikake (Japanese rice seasoning) (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add the onion and sauté until translucent.

  2. Add the garlic and ginger and sauté for another minute.

  3. Add the beef and stir-fry until browned.

  4. Add the soy sauce, sake, mirin, and sugar. Stir well to combine.

  5. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes until the beef is cooked through and the sauce has thickened.

  6. Serve the beef and sauce over a bowl of hot steamed rice. Top with chopped green onions and furikake, if desired.
