How To Make Indonesian Soto Betawi Recipe

A creamy, spicy and flavor-packed traditional soup from Jakarta made with beef, potatoes and fresh herbs.

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 500g beef, cut into bite-sized chunks
  • 2 potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 2 stalks of lemongrass
  • 4 kaffir lime leaves
  • 1 tbsp of salt
  • 1 tsp of sugar
  • 1 tsp of white pepper
  • 3 tbsp of oil
  • 2L of water
  • 2 cups of coconut milk
  • 100g bean sprouts, blanched
  • 1 lime, cut into wedges
  • Fried shallots and chopped fresh herbs for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a pot, heat oil and sauté the beef until browned.

  2. Add lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, salt, sugar and white pepper.

  3. Pour water and bring to a boil.

  4. Reduce heat to simmer and let it cook for about 45 minutes until the beef is tender.

  5. Add potatoes and coconut milk, let it simmer for another 10-15 minutes until the potatoes are cooked.

  6. Remove lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves.

  7. Serve hot with blanched bean sprouts, lime wedges, fried shallots and chopped herbs.
