How To Make Dutch Herring Recipe

  • 4 fresh herring fillets, skin-on
  • 1/2 cup diced red onion
  • 1/4 cup diced pickles
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp chopped dill
  • 1 tbsp white wine vinegar
  • Pinch of salt and pepper


  1. Rinse the herring fillets under cold water and pat dry with a paper towel. Cut each fillet into bite-sized pieces and arrange them on a serving platter.

  2. In a bowl, mix together the diced red onion and pickles, and spoon them over the herring.

  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the sour cream, mayonnaise, chopped dill, white wine vinegar, salt, and pepper. Drizzle over the herring and serve immediately.
