How To Make South African Traditional Vetkoek (Fried Bread)
Serves:
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon instant yeast
- 1 cup lukewarm water
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions
-
In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.
-
Gradually add the lukewarm water to the dry ingredients, mixing well until a soft dough forms.
-
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic.
-
Place the dough back into the bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
-
Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot or frying pan over medium heat.
-
Pinch off golf ball-sized pieces of dough and shape them into balls. Gently flatten each ball with your hand.
-
Carefully place the dough rounds into the hot oil, frying them in batches until golden brown on both sides.
-
Remove the vetkoek from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
-
Serve the vetkoek warm with your choice of fillings such as mince, curried chicken, or jam.
