How To Make South African Traditional Vetkoek (Fried Bread)

Preparation: 15 minutes
Cooking: 20 minutes
Total: 35 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon instant yeast
  • 1 cup lukewarm water
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.

  2. Gradually add the lukewarm water to the dry ingredients, mixing well until a soft dough forms.

  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic.

  4. Place the dough back into the bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

  5. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot or frying pan over medium heat.

  6. Pinch off golf ball-sized pieces of dough and shape them into balls. Gently flatten each ball with your hand.

  7. Carefully place the dough rounds into the hot oil, frying them in batches until golden brown on both sides.

  8. Remove the vetkoek from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

  9. Serve the vetkoek warm with your choice of fillings such as mince, curried chicken, or jam.
