Prep: 30 mins
Rise: 2 hrs 15 mins
Cook: 50 mins
Total: 3 hrs 35 mins
Serves:

Ingredients

  • 1 lb all purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 cup water
  • ½ cup water, warm
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 oz unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tbsp active dry yeast
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp caraway seeds, plus more for sprinkling
  • 2 tsp salt
  • olive oil, for greasing

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine ½ cup of warm water, yeast, and sugar. Stir until dissolved, cover, and set aside. Allow the yeast to activate for roughly 30 minutes.

  2. While waiting, sift together your flour and salt in a large mixing bowl.

  3. Add your caraway seeds, then stir to combine.

  4. Make a well at the center, then pour the activated yeast, remaining water, and butter. Fold the flour until a dough is formed.

  5. Dust your working area with flour, then place your dough on it. Knead for roughly 8 to 10 minutes until a smooth dough is achieved.

  6. Grease a mixing bowl with oil and place the dough. Cover and set it aside in a warm area. Allow your dough to rise for roughly an hour.

  7. While waiting, line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  8. Dust your working area once again with flour. Knock the dough back, then place your risen dough onto your working area.

  9. Cover and set aside in a warm area. Allow it to rise for roughly 45 minutes until double in size.

  10. Preheat your oven to 425 degrees F while waiting.

  11. Brush your dough with the beaten egg, then sprinkle more caraway seeds around and on top of your dough.

  12. Design the dough by making short slashes along its length.

  13. Bake for roughly 25 minutes until golden brown, then reduce the temperature to 350 degrees F. Continue baking for another 25 minutes or until fully baked. Your bread should sound hollow when tapped at the bottom when done.

  14. Allow your bread to cool at room temperature. Portion accordingly and serve!
