How To Make Campbell’s French Onion Soup

A warm and comforting soup made with caramelized onions and beef broth, topped with melted Gruyere cheese.

Ingredients

  • 3 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 1/4 cup dry red wine (optional)
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 slices of French bread, toasted
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, melt butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and saute for 15-20 minutes until they are caramelized.

  2. Sprinkle flour over onions and stir for 1 minute until it is fully incorporated.

  3. Pour in beef broth, red wine, and Worcestershire sauce. Increase heat to high and bring to a boil.

  4. Reduce heat to low and let the soup simmer for 10-15 minutes.

  5. Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls, and place a slice of toasted French bread on top of each. Sprinkle shredded Gruyere cheese over bread.

  6. Place bowls under the broiler for 3-5 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.

  7. Serve hot and enjoy!
