How To Make Clam Roll Recipe

A classic New England seafood sandwich filled with crispy fried clams and served on a soft roll.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs fresh whole belly clams, cleaned
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 4 soft hot dog rolls
  • Tartar sauce, for serving
  • Lemon wedges, for serving

Instructions

  1. Mix flour, salt, and black pepper in a shallow dish. In another shallow dish, whisk together milk and egg.

  2. Heat vegetable oil in a large pot until it reaches 375°F.

  3. Dredge clams in flour mixture, shake off excess. Dip in milk mixture, letting excess drip off. Dredge in flour mixture again, shaking off excess.

  4. Fry clams in hot oil until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes. Drain on paper towels.

  5. Toast hot dog rolls and fill with fried clams. Serve with tartar sauce and lemon wedges.
