How to Make Fried Fish with Sweet Chili and Garlic Sauce

With a thick sweet chili and garlic sauce, this popular Thai deep-fried fish is brimming with flavors. Flaky tilapia is coated with flour for a crispy dish.

Prep: 5 mins
Cook: 15 mins
Total: 20 mins
Serves:

Ingredients

  • 1 large nile tilapia, or other perch type fish
  • 1 Thai long chili, or other mild red chili
  • 2 Thai hot chilies
  • 5 large garlic cloves
  • 2 tbsp coconut sugar
  • 2 tbsp fish sauce
  • 1 cup vegetable oil, more or less, depending on the pan

Instructions

  1. Coat the fish in flour and fry it in deep oil over medium heat for about 5 minutes on each side, then remove it to a wire rack to drain the oil.
  2. Pour the oil from the pan, leaving just a little to coat the pan, then add the chilies, garlic, sugar, and fish sauce.
  3. Fry until it makes a rich and sticky sauce.

  4. Arrange the fish on a nice plate, then pour the sauce over it.
  5. Serve with steamed rice. Enjoy!
