How To Make Spiced Shepherd’s Pie

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground lamb
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 carrot, diced
  • 1 celery stalk, diced
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 1 cup beef or vegetable broth
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 cups mashed potatoes
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Chopped parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. In a large skillet, brown the ground lamb over medium-high heat. Remove excess fat, if necessary.

  3. Add the onion, garlic, carrot, and celery to the skillet. Cook until vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes.

  4. Stir in the cumin, paprika, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper (if using). Cook for another 2 minutes.

  5. Add the frozen peas, broth, and tomato paste. Bring to a simmer and let cook for 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  6. Transfer the lamb mixture to a baking dish. Spread the mashed potatoes over the top, making sure to cover the entire dish.

  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the potatoes are golden brown and the filling is bubbly.

  8. Garnish with chopped parsley before serving.
